You can contribute to this index by posting any relevant information concerning the position, function, action being done through linguistic items (lexical, phrasal etc.) in Greek talk-in-interaction and what analysis or observation is made about them in existing literature. The administrators of this group (Alexandra and Chryso) will organise the collection of items and make it available to the group members. But we need your help in order to make this work!

In case you are looking for papers on quantification in CA and, especially, caution about quantification, have a look at this one:

Schegloff, Emanuel A. (1993) 'Reflections on Quantification in the Study of Conversation', Research on Language and Social Interaction, 26: 99-128.

Alexandra and Chryso have been wondering whether the discussion has gone any further since Schegloff (1993). Here is a more recent reference:

Haakana, Markku (2002) 'Laughter in medical interaction: From quantification to analysis, and back', Journal of Sociolinguistics, 6: 207-35

We could start this topic by letting each other know what kind of data we have worked/are working with (audio/video recordings, everyday conversation/institutional

interaction, amount of data, phenomena under study etc.) so as to find common areas of interest.

For example, Alexandra has transcribed and analysed 20 hours of teacher-pupil talk, collected in 11 nursery classrooms in Athens and Piraeus. These are audio recordings in analogue tapes. Here are some topics Alexandra examined as part of her doctoral thesis: classroom turn-taking, personal pronouns in turn-initial position, IRE three-part sequences, pupils’ ethno-methods for providing answers and teachers’ responses, teachers’ repetitions of pupils’ utterances and intonation.

At the moment, Alexandra is working with everyday conversation data: 140 minutes of talk among friends (while having coffee, watching TV, in informal gatherings etc.). These are MP3s (audio) files. She is interested in the broader area of CA ‘grammar and interaction’ (Ochs, Schegloff and Thompson 1996). She is examining the positioning and projectability of TCUs and how the unfolding syntax of a turn shapes turn-taking.
